LV LOCAL OFFICER RECOGNIZED FOR COMMITMENT TO LABOR
LV Local Clerk Craft Director Fran Friel has been named AFL-CIO Labor Leader of the Week.  When Fran learned of the dispute between the Painters & Laborers unions and the Double Tree Guest Suites he immediately took action.  Fran sought to resolve the differences between the parties, but once he realized that was not possible he made the decision to move the PPWU state convention to a different hotel.  Fran's decision to support solidarity and union brotherhood against a money grubbing, scab hiring, low wage paying corporation has earned the respect of labor leaders throughout Pennsylvania and the nation.  The Lehigh Valley Area Local is proud to call Fran one of our own and congratulates him on this great honor.

ASK PRESIDENT BURRUS:  Dues Money Going To Obama?

Question:  Regarding the National Executive Board’s endorsement of Obama for president: Are a portion of my dues being used for this endorsement? I don’t endorse Mr. Obama and I don’t want my dues going for his benefit.  President Burrus responds: "Thank you for your question. So that you and other members who support a different candidate will know, no APWU dues money has been contributed to Sen. Obama’s campaign for the Democratic nomination. In fact, it is illegal to contribute dues money to a political candidate’s campaign".

HERSHEY PARK - STAYING OVERNIGHT
Driving to and from Hershey can make for a long day after walking the park for hours.  The Local has negotiated reduced room rates for a limited number of rooms at the Grantville Holiday Inn for the nights of July 12, July 13 and July 14, 2008.  Anyone wishing to stay overnight at the reduced rates must make their reservations prior to June 25th.  The Holiday Inn is about 10 minutes from the park and kids 12 and under stay / eat for free.  For room rates and information on how to make a reservation use the links at right.

REDUCING CLERK HOURS - What To Watch For
Is your Postmaster cutting clerk hours?  If the answer is "Yes" you are not alone.  The USPS is making a concerted effort to reduce costs by cutting employee work hours.  While it may not be a contractual violation to reduce clerk hours, it is a violation to do so at the same time as the postmaster increasing the amount of clerk work they do.

If your Postmaster increases their amount of clerk work they do while cutting your hours, document the change on the Postmaster Performing Clerk Work form and notify the Union Office.

ASK PRESIDENT BURRUS:  COLA Not Enough
The cost of living has increased significantly as a result of the increases in the price of a barrel of oil...Our COLA does not reflect the true cost of the increase in the cost of living, or even come close to it...are there any plans for APWU to seek changes in the formula?
